Dr. Geetanjali A. Akerkar was recognized as the Middlesex North District Medical Society’s 2021 Community Clinician of the Year.
Dr. Geetanjali A. Akerkar has been practicing for over 15 years at Gastro Health (Formerly Digestive Health Specialists) – a practice that has been providing GI care in the Merrimack Valley for 39 years. She majored in Genetics at Cornell University and subsequently earned her MD at Cornell University Medical College. She completed her Internship and Residency at Beth Israel Hospital and the finished her fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of California San Francisco.
She stayed on faculty at UCSF developing expertise in Virtual Colonoscopy, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and Liver Disease, including Liver Transplantation. Dr. Akerkar is a Clinical Instructor in Medicine at Beth Israel Hospital, Harvard Medical School. She has been named a Fellow of the American Gastroenterology Association.
“Gastroenterology disorders can affect multiple organ systems,” said Akerkar in an interview for Boston Magazine. “Patients may present with diarrhea but have a thyroid problem. It is important to consider the entire body when evaluating a patient. Gastroenterology also allows me to manage a diversity of conditions; infections such as viral hepatitis, autoimmune disease such as Crohn’s or Celiac disease, and precancerous lesions such as Barrett’s or adenomatous polyps of the colon.”
