Ian Kaden, M.D. is a fellowship trained corneal specialist and board certified ophthalmologist with more than twenty years experience in private practice. He was educated at Brown University, Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He did ophthalmology training at Albert Einstein School of Medicine and a corneal fellowship at the University of Michigan Medical Center. Following his training, Dr. Kaden practiced as a corneal specialist in East Lansing, Michigan and West Orange, NJ. In 1995, he opened his own medical practice in Randolph, New Jersey. Over the past two decades this practice has treated more than twenty thousand patients. Dr. Kaden is widely recognized as an expert in refractive, cataract, and corneal transplant surgeries.
As a leader in the field of refractive eye surgery, Dr. Kaden has been active in the field since 1992. Refractive surgery was in its early days then, and radial keratotomy (RK), an incisional technique for reshaping the cornea, was popular. Dr. Kaden trained in RK as a corneal surgery fellow and became a teacher of RK techniques to other ophthalmologists in Michigan and later in New Jersey. In 1994, he joined the Summit Laser team investigating the application of the excimer laser to refractive surgery. Laser refractive surgery ultimately replaced radial keratotomy because of its enhanced safety and accuracy. In 1999, Dr. Kaden became the Chief Surgeon at Pyramid Laser Surgery Center in Manhattan. He performed LASIK surgery there for five years treating over a thousand patients. After leaving the Manhattan center, he focused exclusively on his New Jersey practice. He performs all refractive procedures at the Refractive Surgery Center of the Barnabas Health Ambulatory Care Center in Livingston, NJ. This ultra-modern facility offers access to state of the art instrumentation for refractive surgery. He now offers all laser custom LASIK surgery at an affordable price in this convenient center.
Dr. Kaden is regarded as one of northern New Jersey’s leading cataract and refractive-cataract surgeons. He operates on 300 or more patients annually and brings his sight restoring expertise to each patient with a kind and caring manner. The process begins with a thorough examination and an in-depth conversation with the doctor regarding the diagnosis and options. Patients are never pressured to have surgery. Rather a process of education is initiated and patients make their own decision to proceed with surgery. The doctor also presents choices regarding lens implant selection. Options include multifocal, accommodating, and astigmatism correcting lenses. Another option for patients is laser assisted cataract surgery with the LenSx laser system. Laser cataract surgery enhances outcomes by making precise incisions and reducing the ultrasound energy required to break up and remove cataracts.
For patients with corneal disease, Dr. Kaden is one of the region’s most experienced and respected corneal surgeons. He treats problems including kerataconus, corneal scars, corneal dystrophies, bullous keratopathy, pterygium and ocular trauma. He completed a fellowship in corneal surgery at the renowned Kellogg Eye Institute of the University of Michigan Medical Center. He is skilled in traditional corneal transplantation and endothelial keratoplasty ( DSEK) surgery. He trained in DSEK at Johns Hopkins Hospital and has participated in conferences at Johns Hopkins, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, and Tissue Banks International. Dr. Kaden has been an eye bank medical director and is affiliated with several regional eye banks.
