Biography:
Dr. John M. Haydek’s journey into medicine began in Chicago, where he was born and raised, transitioning from a Christian grammar school and seminary high school to the University of Illinois to earn a degree in pharmacy. He subsequently achieved his M.D. degree at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago, where he also completed his internship, medical residency, chief residency, and gastroenterology fellowship.
Prior to moving to Knoxville, Tennessee, Dr. Haydek served as an academic gastroenterologist and assistant professor of medicine at Loyola University Medical Center and Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital for three years. His dedication to the field continued after joining Gastrointestinal Associates, where he was instrumental in the Center of Excellence for Treatment of Barrett’s Esophagus at Thompson Cancer Survival Center, focusing on endoscopic treatments for Barrett’s Esophagus and early-stage esophageal cancer.
A pioneer alongside Dr. Bergein Overholt, Dr. Haydek has introduced groundbreaking endoscopic treatments such as photodynamic therapy, radiofrequency ablation, and various endoscopic mucosal resection techniques. His role as principal investigator for several clinical studies on Barrett’s esophagus and as the medical director of the Center of Excellence underscores his pivotal contributions to gastroenterology.
Dr. Haydek’s professional accolades include more than 20 research publications, multiple “Outstanding Teacher” nominations, and “Top Physician” honors on both local and national levels. His fellowship in four major medical organizations reflects his expertise and dedication to the field.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Haydek, alongside his wife Susan and their three children, enjoys an active outdoor lifestyle, including fishing, hiking, and bird watching. He also serves as a reserve elder in the Presbyterian church, contributing significantly to his community.
