Dr. Kamal Amer is a member of Gastroenterology Associates of New Jersey, with offices in both Paterson and Woodland Park. A Palestinian-American who grew up in Paterson, NJ, Dr. Amer has established strong roots in the local community and understands the unique health challenges experienced by its diverse population. In addition to being fluent in Arabic, he speaks both Spanish and English.
Dr. Amer is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Association of Liver Disease, New Jersey Medical School, the American Medical Association, and the American College of Physicians. He joined the team at GANJ in 2023.
In addition to being board-certified in gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition, Dr. Amer is also board-certified in obesity medicine.
A graduate of Passaic County Technical Institute (PCTI) with a focus on medical arts, Dr. Amer continued his undergraduate education at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), where he graduated magna cum laude. He continued his education into medical school at Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) where his exceptional academic achievements and leadership skills were also recognized when he was elected president of the AOA (Alpha Omega Alpha-the medical honor society). Dr. Amer pursued Internal Medicine residency training at Thomas Jefferson University, before returning to Rutgers-NJMS to undergo specialized training in Gastroenterology. During his fellowship, he was elected as the chief fellow for his department, showcasing his leadership and expertise in the field.
A prodigious researcher, Dr. Amer has authored many industry publications and presentations, including most recently The Effect of Dietary Intervention on Patients with Gastroparesis and Hepatic Involvement in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases.
Dr. Amer’s community service includes founding the Al-Shifaa Student Health Organization, a Newark-based clinic providing free health care for underserved residents of the area in association with New Jersey Medical School, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, New Jersey Dental School, and Temple University of Medicine (see article in TAPinto).
