She completed her undergraduate studies in Nutrition and Food Science at Hunter College in New York City before attending medical school at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. Dr. Choi completed her general surgery residency at New York Methodist Hospital (now NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital) and subsequently worked as a general surgeon at the same hospital for four years.
