Professional Statement
Dr. Carriker’s career in medicine began when she was fifteen as a nurses aide at Lucy Lee Hospital in Poplar Bluff, Mo. She worked nights and weekends through high school and was given an academic scholarship to attend St. Johns Hospital School of Nursing in St. Louis, Missouri.
Working as a registered nurse, she attended Arizona State University to receive a B.S. degree in Zoology. She was in honor societies, phi kappa phi and alpha epsilon delta. She received her M.D. degree from University of Colorado in 1968 She did her internship at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix, followed by a five-year training program in ophthalmology. During this time, she attended the Stanford course in Ophthalmology, the Lancaster Course in Maine and Eye Pathology at Estelle Doheny Eye Institute. Her training was supervised by Dr. Francis Adler and Dr. Frederick Carriker.
She has traveled extensively across the nation to learn the latest surgical techniques, and has applied her skills in a wide variety of techniques. She has special interest and training in clear cornea cataract surgery with intraocular lens implant recently, she has trained and certified for the new premium multifocal implants Tecnis and Crystalens.
She also has expertise in Epi-lasik, the advanced surface ablation with wavefront technology. Dr. Carriker is a diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a member of the academy. Her memberships include American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Arizona Ophthalmological Society, and past President and current member of Phoenix Ophthalmological Society. She has active staff privileges at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Arizona Ophthalmic Outpatient Surgery Center. Her hobbies include walking and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She is also a proud owner of 2 labrador dogs, Gogo and Sasha.
