Louis Rizio, MD, specializes in sports medicine and orthopaedic surgery. As a fellowship trained sports medicine surgeon I sub-specialize in the treatment of sports related injuries and have extensive experience performing arthroscopic surgery, minimally invasive knee surgery, minimally invasive shoulder surgery and cartilage restoration procedures. My practice focuses on athletes ranging from professionals to the weekend warrior, including pediatric sports injuries. In addition, I see a variety of orthopedic conditions involving fractures, strains/sprains, motor vehicle and work-related injuries including non-surgical treatment of the spine.

After completing my residency in orthopaedic surgery at Tufts University Medical Center, I completed an additional year of training in sports medicine at UHZ – Miami Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Institute (University of Miami). I was then named Chief of Sports Medicine for the Department of Orthopaedics at Rutgers Medical School from 2000-2005.

I have practiced privately in New York and New Jersey. Positions included being an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedics at New York University – Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York City. Formerly, a clinical instructor for the University of Miami Department of Orthopedics.

Currently, I care for the athletes at the New Jersey Institute of Technology Division 1 NCAA athletic program where I have been the Head Team Physician for over 15 years. I have worked with numerous high schools in the area and continue to do so.

Previous positions include: Former Team Physician for New Jersey Pride Professional Lacrosse and Assistant Team Physician for the Miami Dolphins, Florida Marlins and the University of Miami Hurricanes.

Research interests are primarily devoted to cartilage regeneration/repair with adult stem cells, shoulder related disorders, injuries in throwing athletes, Tommy John surgery, ACL tears and elbow disorders in athletes. I utilize PRP and other biologic treatments in my practice to enhance healing and recovery.

I have published articles, abstracts, and book chapters on related topics in orthopedics. Articles and abstracts are published in prestigious, peer-reviewed scientific journals, including the American Journal of Sorts Medicine, Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, Journal of Knee Surgery, Techniques in Knee Surgery, Orthopaedics and Tissue Engineering.
