Biography:
Dr. Ramanujan Samavedy’s journey into the field of gastroenterology began in India, where he received his medical degree from the prestigious Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER), Pondicherry University, in 1992. Pursuing further training in the United States, he completed an internship at Long Island College Hospital in New York, followed by a residency and fellowships at Indiana University Medical Center and the University of Wisconsin. These experiences endowed Dr. Samavedy with advanced skills in therapeutic endoscopy and the management of esophageal conditions, including precancer and early cancerous lesions.
With an 18-year tenure as faculty at Indiana University and the University of Tennessee, Dr. Samavedy has significantly contributed to the academic world, receiving the Gold Star teaching award and establishing critical endoscopic services. His leadership as the medical director of endoscopy at the University of Tennessee Medical Center and his role in the UT Cancer Institute underscore his commitment to advancing the treatment of GI cancers and endoscopic innovation.
Board certified in both gastroenterology and internal medicine, Dr. Samavedy is a respected member of the American College of Gastroenterology and American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. His practice encompasses the full spectrum of gastroenterology care, with a particular focus on GI cancers and diseases affecting the colon, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, and bile duct.
Dr. Samavedy’s compassionate care has been recognized by the Guardian Angel program at UT Medical Center and the consistent acknowledgment as a “Top Doc” by Cityview magazine since 2013.
Outside his professional life, Dr. Samavedy, his wife Nalini, and their daughter enjoy living in Knoxville. An enthusiast of the outdoors, Dr. Samavedy relishes hiking, traveling, and playing recreational tennis, reflecting his appreciation for a balanced lifestyle.
