Richard L. Otero
M.D.- Gastroenterology
Richard Otero, M.D. followed in the footsteps of his father, pursuing a career in medicine and quickly reaching high points early in his career, including Chief of Staff and Chief of the GI Division at Baptist Hospital in San Antonio. While these achievements brought him great satisfaction, he believed the true rewards come from his patients. He says, “I consider it an honor that each patient trusts me with their care. I want to do everything I can to be proactive in their care, but I also want to give them the knowledge and tools to be proactive themselves.”
Before he began his pursuit of a career in medicine, Dr. Otero completed his undergraduate work at Harvard College. He then went on to obtain his Medical Doctorate at Southwestern Medical School and completed his internship and residency at the University of Texas Affiliated Hospitals in Houston, Texas. He went on to accept a Fellowship in Gastroenterology there as well.
When you ask why he chose gastroenterology, Dr. Otero describes the diversity that comes with the field, stating, “it gives me the opportunity to work with patients while performing procedures—it is both mentally and physically challenging every day.”
When he finds time for himself, he enjoys traveling around the globe. His trips have taken him to far and exotic locales, including Turkey, Italy, Thailand, and Bali.
