Dr. Sarah S. Schaefer graduated from Union College, Schenectady, New York in 1985 with a BA in Psychology. She graduated Summa Cum Laude in Psychology and received a Sigma Xi Award for Outstanding Science. She was also elected to Phi Beta Kappa. In 1989 she graduated from the New York University of Medicine where she was awarded a Doctor of Medicine Degree.
While attending New York University School of Medicine, she was the Student Director of N.Y.U. Student Health. She remained at New York School of Medicine for surgical residency training at Tisch, Bellevue and the Manhattan Veterans’ Hospitals. Upon the conclusion of her residency, she joined the attending surgical staff at Bellevue, where she supervised the Surgical Breast Service and its associated clinics. The Bellevue Hospital Surgical Breast Service is a multi-disciplinary breast care service comprised of several surgeons, radiologists and medical and radiation oncologists.
Dr. Schaefer received her Board Certification from the American Board of Surgery in 1995. She specializes in Bloodless Surgery and Breast Surgery. She maintains memberships in several professional societies. Dr. Schaefer is a surgical attending at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston, New Jersey, where she participates on several hospital committees. She has lectured for Barnabas Health’s gynecology residency, and has been awarded special recognition from the American Cancer Society for her dedication to the education of women regarding breast diseases and treatment. Dr. Schaefer is a true believer of holistic treatment from a women’s perspective since psychological and spiritual factors are critical to a patient’s physical recovery and well-being.
