Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Dr. Sarkis J. Chobanian’s distinguished career in medicine began after his graduation from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He completed an exhaustive series of training programs, including his internship, residency, chief residency, and gastroenterology fellowship, all at the prestigious National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.
During his notable service in the United States Navy, Dr. Chobanian rose to the rank of commander within the United States Navy Medical Corps. He served as assistant head of the Division of Gastroenterology at the Bethesda Naval Hospital, demonstrating exceptional leadership and expertise in his field.
Dr. Chobanian’s roles have included serving as a consultant gastroenterologist to the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute. His dedication and skill led him to be appointed as the attending gastroenterologist to the U.S. Congress and the President of the United States, a testament to his outstanding contributions to the field of gastroenterology.
An accomplished author, Dr. Chobanian has published over 80 abstracts, articles, and book chapters, contributing significantly to medical literature. He has edited a comprehensive book on clinical problems in gastroenterology and co-edited “Office Endoscopy,” alongside Dr. Bergein Overholt, enriching the knowledge base of medical professionals worldwide.
Throughout his career, Dr. Chobanian has been recognized for his excellence in teaching, receiving awards from the intern class of Bethesda Naval Hospital, the National Naval Medical Center, and a commendation for the care of President Reagan. His leadership extended to his tenure as chief of the medical staff and director of the Gastrointestinal Lab at Tennova.
